Early Detection Saves Lives
At Granada Dental, we offer comprehensive oral cancer screenings as part of our commitment to your overall health. Early detection of oral cancer is crucial, and our team is here to help identify any potential issues during your visit. Over 56,000 North Americans are diagnosed with oral cancer every year, with nearly 11,000 deaths resulting from it. By catching it early, we can begin treatment immediately, significantly improving your chances of survival.
What is Oral Cancer?
Oral cancer refers to cancer of the soft tissues within the mouth, including the tongue, cheeks, tonsils, soft palate, pharynx, lips, and salivary glands. It is important to be aware of the signs and symptoms of oral cancer so that it can be detected as early as possible.
Common Warning Signs of Oral Cancer
Swollen lumps or bumps inside the mouth or on the gums
Red or white patches in the mouth
Bleeding or numbness in any area of the mouth or neck
Sores that last longer than two weeks
Difficulty chewing, swallowing, or moving the jaw
Ear pain
Persistent cough
Breathing problems
Voice changes (hoarseness)
A change in how your teeth fit together
If you're experiencing any of these symptoms, don't hesitate to contact us for an oral cancer screening. Catching oral cancer in its early stages makes treatment more effective and increases survival rates.
7 Known Causes of Oral Cancer
Weak Immune System: Those with weakened immune systems (due to organ transplants or autoimmune diseases like multiple sclerosis or rheumatoid arthritis) are at greater risk.
Tobacco Use: Smoking or chewing tobacco increases the likelihood of oral cancer by six times.
Diet: A diet low in fruits and vegetables can elevate your risk. It's important to eat a balanced diet rich in vitamins and fiber.
Alcohol Consumption: Alcohol consumption, especially combined with tobacco use, significantly raises the risk of developing oral cancer.
HPV (Human Papillomavirus): HPV can infect cells in the throat and tongue, raising the risk of oral cancer, though symptoms can be subtle.
Prior Cancer History: If you've had cancer in the past, your risk of developing oral cancer again increases.
Sun Exposure: Prolonged exposure to the sun, especially for fair-skinned individuals or those who spend lots of time outdoors (e.g., gardeners or golfers), raises the risk of lip cancer. Protect yourself by wearing SPF lip balm and hats.
Oral Cancer Facts
Oral cancer is twice as common in men as it is in women.
It is the eighth most common cancer among men.
The average age of diagnosis is 62.
25% of cases occur in people younger than 55.
The 5-year survival rate is 65%.
If diagnosed early, the survival rate increases to 84%.
If cancer has spread, the survival rate drops to 39%.
Oral Cancer Self-Check
In addition to the screenings we perform at Granada Dental, we encourage you to check your mouth at home once a month for any signs of oral cancer. Here’s how you can do a thorough self-examination:
Lips & Front Gums: Look and feel for any changes, bumps, or lumps.
Roof of Mouth: Shine a light and feel for any changes in texture.
Cheeks & Back Gums: Pull your cheeks out to inspect and feel the inner surfaces and gums for any abnormalities.
Tongue: Use a washcloth to pull your tongue forward and check the top, bottom, and the floor of your mouth for any changes.
Lymph Nodes: Feel under your jaw and on both sides of your neck for any swollen lymph nodes. Swelling may indicate an infection, but persistent swelling should be checked by a professional.
If you notice anything unusual that lasts more than two weeks, contact us immediately to schedule a visit.
Our Commitment to Oral Cancer Screenings
At Granada Dental, oral cancer screenings are an essential part of our regular dental exams. We take the time to thoroughly examine your mouth, face, head, and neck for any signs of oral cancer. Our team checks the soft tissues under your tongue, on your tongue, cheeks, gums, palate, and throat for abnormalities such as discoloration, lumps, or rough patches. If we find anything concerning, we will discuss the next steps with you to ensure you receive the appropriate care.
